Over the past year or so, livejournal communities have taken work from Flickr without proper credit or consent and redistributed them in the form of various graphics (icons, banners), asking for credit for work that isn't theirs. protect_flickr is a livejournal community for people committed to protecting the work of Flickr photographers and illustrators by demanding that livejournal graphic makers seek permission to use work, and give credit where it is due.

Many livejournal members have misconceptions about the the purpose of Flickr and the protection it offers its members.

We, the undersigned, request that anyone interested in using a Flickr image observe the following etiquette:

1. Attempt to obtain permission BEFORE using an image, and allow a generous amount of time for a response from the author.

2. Credit the author in a manner decided upon by the author, and in a way that clearly denotes the original author of an image.
